Yuruk long rug

Yoruk long rug / runner

from eastern Anatolia, Turkey

circa 1880

Size: 328 x 127 cm

The Yoruk are the nomads of Turkey and are scattered from east to west across the country and are of varied ethnic composition. Those in the east are largely of kurdish and turkic stock. This piece, with its beautiful rich tertiary colours, is probably from the Malatya area and shows a field design related to the earlier 17th and 18th century shield carpets from the neighbouring Caucasus. The multiple medallion field design relates to the composition of earlier Caucasian rugs.
