Tabriz carpet

Tabriz carpet

northern Persia

circa 1900

Size: 456 x 376 cm

Tabriz rose to prominence as an important market city and provincial capital of Azerbidjian in northern Persia during the latter half of the 19th century. With the burgeoning interest in oriental carpets in the west, Tabriz became one of the important centres of workshop production. This finely knotted room size carpet displays a classical ‘herati’ field and border design typical of many Tabriz carpets of the period. The drawing of both border and field is exceptionally elegant and well proportioned when compared to the many later Tabriz examples.
