Gendje rug

Gendje rug

from the southern Caucasus

late 19th century

Size: 202 x 120 cm

The Caucasus is a melting pot of different tribal and ethnic groups. Prominent amongst the rug weavers are the Azeri Turks, the Armenians, the Kurds and the Talish.

With its shorter pile and relatively fine knotting, this rug is different to most weavings of the Kazak type from the southern Caucasus. The plethora of stylised geometric motifs, flowers, animals and amulets surround multiple variations on the latch-hooked medallions in the field and provide the viewer with a source of continuing fascination.
