Baluch Rug, eastern Persia

Baluch rug
from eastern Persia
circa 1900
Size: 182 x 93 cm

The most recognisable of old Baluch rugs are those with a limited but vibrant palette of madder red/browns or aubergine shades and an indigo blue. Most are attributed to the Torbat-e-Haydari region of eastern Iran.
The all over design of typically stylised angular palmettes is probably inspired by designs in earlier Persian court and workshop carpets and the so-called ‘split palmette’ motif. The field is surrounded by an attractive border of scrolling vines with white flowers.
