Baluch rug

Baluch rug
eastern Persia
circa 1900
Size: 163 x 94cm

The field design is fascinating in that the weaver has created an rather unconventional tree of life rooted at the bottom of the camel field and branching above into a tree of various stylised hanging fruits or flowers. These motifs are starkly geometric and the rich camel hair ground is littered with an array of smaller motifs and stylised animal forms.

The wool in this case is soft and lustrous and the dyeing of a very high quality – deep indigo blues and rich madder tones of red and aubergine.
The complexity of design and richness of palette add to the charm of the piece.
