Akstafa Shirvan long rug

Akstafa Shirvan long rug
from the eastern Caucasus
circa 1860
Size: 280 x 108 cm

This rug features one of the great classical designs of 19th century Caucasian weaving, the so-called Akstafa pattern of stylised birds and large ‘diamond over square’ medallions.
Dominant in the design are the monumental peacock-like birds which over time have been reduced in form. In this early example the birds have retained their legs and fantastic tails. A myriad of smaller stylised geometric motifs are scattered across the deep indigo blue field. There is a certain ‘symmetry without symmetry’.
The undeniable vitality and spontaneity of such colour and form make Akstafas a favourite amongst rug enthusiasts.
