Saruk, a centre of village workshop production, came to greater prominence during the second half of the 19th century. The earliest of Saruk carpets bear the hallmarks of the highly skilled village artisan prior to the advent of mass production. The weavers’ own artistic input is discernible in the gentle angularity of the branches and floral medallions. This is a masterpiece of design although the colours have darkened and the condition has suffered over time. Some further cleaning and judicious restoration to the original side cords hidden beneath an added wrapping would improve it. There is a wonderful delicacy of drawing in the field, and in the split palmettes and curling tendrils of the border.
