Luri rug, Exhibition ‘South Persian Tribal Rugs’

Luri rug

from central Persia

circa 1880

Size: 240 x 110cm

The Lurs people are some of the oldest inhabitants of the Iranian plateau and are closely linked with the Bakhtiyari, and the Khamseh Confederation to the south. Here the ivory ground field contains hooked octagons arranged in a grid and is surrounded by vibrantly colourful borders. The interest lies in this repeating field arrangement . By means of colour and a fluid rather than stiff execution, the rug has been imbued with a great vitality.
