This piece, known as a ‘joval’ or storage bag for the tent, was woven in sumak and cicm technique by women of central Anatolia who, in earlier times, were tribal nomads inhabiting the region to the east of Konya .
Jovals were used to store belongings or grain and then stacked at the back of the tent or hung on the walls. Cicim is a term used in Turkey to denote a particular variant of supplementary weft weaving.
