Shirvan kilim

Shirvan kilim

from the southern Caucasus

late 19th century

Size: 278 x 125 cm

The kilims of the Caucasus, woven in slit tapestry technique, are usually divided into two main groups, the ‘Kuba’ or north Caucasian variety and the ‘Shirvan’ or southern Caucasian variety.

Typical of most Shirvan kilims, this piece exhibits a simple banded design of bold geometric motifs without a surrounding border. It is very finely woven with clear and vibrant natural dyes on an ivory ground.

It is older and much more interesting than the vast majority of Caucasian kilims which arrive on the market today.
