Caucasian rugs are generally characterised by strongly geometric patterns and vibrant colour. They have long been collected because of their great artistic qualities. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London acquired the greater part of their entire Caucasian collection in the 1880’s and Caucasian rugs gave inspiration to much 20th century abstract art.
This rug of the late 19th century from the Kuba region in the north eastern Caucasus features bold radiant ‘floral’ medallions. The field, filled with a myriad of stylised geometric motifs, is a source of endless fascination for the viewer.
