Tabriz rose to prominence as an important market city and provincial capital of Azerbidjian in northern Persia during the latter half of the 19th century. With the burgeoning interest in oriental carpets in the west, Tabriz became one of the important centres of 19th century workshop production.
The design is typical of many Tabriz rugs of this period, a central pendant medallion surrounded by a soft red monochromatic field and corner spandrels of quarters of the same central medallion. The weaving is very fine and the drawing of both border and field is exceptionally elegant.
