Serapi carpet

northern Persia

circa 1900

Size: 470 x 328 cm

Heriz is a township in northern Persia and an important centre for village production of the region to the northeast of Tabriz.

Older pieces such as this are usually quite archaic in their drawing with bold angular forms and better space and proportion than their modern counterparts. These are often referred to in the trade as Serapi carpets.

Monumental medallions are typical and most tend to be lighter in palette with ivory or muted red grounds. There is a preference for soft harmonic tones as in this beautiful old room size carpet.
