Kuba Seichur rug

Kuba Seichur rug

from the north eastern Caucasus

circa 1900

Rugs from the northern Caucasus are generally finer in their knotting and shorter in pile.

Seichur is the most northerly town of the Kuba region of the northern Caucasus. Rugs of the region are often further categorised according to design.

In this case the overall composition is not typical of Seichur but the angular bird motifs and stylised flowers in field and border are very recognisable.

The rug is very finely knotted, the work of an experienced weaver as evident in the clarity of colour and well defined motifs.
