Kazak, Lori Pambak

Kazak, Lori Pambak

from the southern Caucasus

late 19th century

Size: 225 x 170 cm

The Caucasus is a melting pot of different tribal and ethnic groups. Prominent amongst the rug weavers are the Azeri Turks, the Armenians, the Kurds and the Talish. Rugs from the southern Caucasus, such as this, are characterised generally by clear contrasting colour and boldly geometric design. They were often grouped according to their design composition. In this case, rugs with these kind of ivory or blue ground octagonal medallions (note the interior detail) in the field were referred to as ‘lori pambak’. It is a most attractive old rug with immediate visual impact.
