Dhurrie, flat woven carpet
Dhurrie, flat woven cotton carpet
from Rajasthan, India
circa 1900
Size: 508 x 326 cm
A dhurrie is an Indian flatwoven cotton carpet. It is quite often huge, sometimes coarse and robust. Whilst older ones were made in cotton, nowadays coarse hemp and other inferior plant fibres are used for warp and weft material. Pieces of this monumental size, fineness and quality of materials and weaving were made in jails in the 19th and early 20th centuries and were known and used as festival or palace dhurries. The design were always quite minimal and repetitive in the huge sizes.
