Avar kilims are invariably long and relatively narrow and feature single, quite dynamic motifs repeated across a plain ground.
These field motifs are supposed to have derived from earlier so-called ‘shield’ and ‘dragon’ designs – favoured themes of earlier Caucasian and Turkish rugs.
