Daghestan felt rug

Daghestan felt rug

from the northern Caucasus

circa 1900

Size: 278 x 162 cm

Felted rugs are made by but a few tribal groups, mainly Turkoman and Uzbeks.

They are also made in the province of Daghestan in the northern Caucasus and have more recently come on to the market with the break up of the former Soviet states. They are relatively few a far between.

Felted rugs are constructed in several ways. This old one is pieced together and then embroidered. Others have the design felted in using different coloured wools. The design is reminiscent of the archaic antler-like motifs in applied and  felted Uzbek bags or ok bash.
