Heriz wagireh
Heriz wagireh
from northern Persia
late 19th century
Size: 270 x 86 cm
A very beautiful small runner which is more likely to be a pattern sampler for the border of a much larger Heriz carpet.
These so-called wagireh were a feature of certain areas where village rugs were knotted from memory or using these wagireh rather than cartoons. Wagireh were common amongst weavers in the township of Bidjar and to a lesser extent in Heriz. The design featured is an extremely elegant rendition of the herati border design. There is obvious damage to one end but this is a very collectible small rug.
