Tientsin was a production centre near Peking in the early 20th century where large carpets were produced in traditional designs but also in patterns and colours influenced by the western arts and crafts and movements. This spectacular yellow ground Nichols carpet features a dragon and a diagonally opposite phoenix in the field surrounded by a border of a deeper golden shade.
