Shirvan Marasali prayer rug

Shirvan Marasali prayer rug

from the eastern Caucasus

circa 1880

Size: 144 x 127 cm

The squarish proportions of this prayer rug are extremely pleasing as is the decorative detail covering the field and spandrels above the mihrab (prayer arch) – a myriad of stylised animals and amulets.

The knotting is by any standards exceedingly fine, allowing the weaver to produce a plethora of tiny motifs interspersed among the lattice of intricate flower heads on an pale yellow field.

The multiplicity of borders displays the weaver’s repertoire of designs. Such pieces were probably made as commissions and their importance was reflected in the care and quality of their creation and artistry.

A fine example in pristine condition.
