Many such textiles were created for the well-to-do Ottoman household. Whilst it was essentially a domestic art of embroidery, professional embroiderers were involved especially at court.
This group of textiles are generally known as ‘islemeler’.
The majority are worked so the decoration in silk on cotton can be seen from both sides.
Techniques such as double darning, satin stitch and needle weaving predominate.
