A very large proportion of west Persian rugs are made by Kurdish people the great majority of whom are nowadays settled. Kurdish towns such as Bidjar and Senneh are famous for their production of fine carpets in the 19th century .
Kurdish village pieces such as this were produced during the latter half of last century and the early part of this century. The undyed ground of either natural sheep’s wool or camel hair is a less common and highly desirable feature. The three medallions float ambiguously in this monochromatic expanse where the darker colours recede and the lighter colours advance on different plane. A forerunner of western abstract art.
