There have been many craft revival projects, most prominently in Turkey over the last several decades. The aim has been to reproduce classical rug designs in the finest materials. The problem has always been to reproduce the colours and wool quality of old rugs. This project out of Sultanhani in central Turkey recycles old wool to faithfully recreate classical old south Caucasian rug designs. The output is very small and the results quite spectacular. Here the monumental field motif is the so-called ‘shield’ design commonly associated these Sewan Kazak rugs.
