The term tulu means ‘unshorn’ and is generally applied to these longer piled rugs from central and eastern Anatolia with minimal or no design motifs. In this sense these rugs can be seen as close to the archetypal form when rug weaving probably originated, as a protection against the cold, some 3000 years ago in Central Asia.
