Many flatwoven items are woven in ‘sumak’ technique. Known technically as ‘continuous supplementary weft faced weaving’, it is a favourite technique for rugs and particularly, saddle bags, grain bags, cradles, bedding bags and horse covers.
Most are from the Caucasus or northern Persia. Afshar sumaks appear less frequently on the market although this one is a recently produced rug.
