Eagle Kazak rug from the southern Caucasus. The outlining dark brown around motifs in many rugs is achieved by combining tannin, probably from oak husks or bark, with a very iron rich mordant. This dyeing process causes the wool to be light sensitive and brittle which has the ultimate effect of an etched surface where the dark brown wool has worn away.
