Madder is the dye most commonly associated with Turkmen weavings. This Tekke rug is a fine example of the brilliant red obtained using madder with a salt of aluminium as a mordant. The skills of the dyer are also evident in the saturated tones of the indigo blues. However, in the main, the Turkmen lacked a good source for yellow dyes.
