Borjalu long Rug

Borjalu long rug
the southern Caucasus
circa 1880
Size: 342 x 104 cm
The Caucasus is a melting pot of different tribal and ethnic groups. Prominent amongst the oriental rug weavers are the Azeri Turks, the Armenians, the Kurds and the Talish.
If the most striking aspect of Kazak rugs is brilliant primary colour and strength of design, then this Borjalu, with its dazzling borders which appear to slide beneath the large latch-hooked medallions of the ivory central field, is a great example.
The weaver’s artistic mastery of space, proportion and plane is obvious.
