This small rug constructed as a mirror image is not a mihrab carpet in the conventional sense, although the stepped sides of the gabled niches suggest the spiritual levels of awareness through which the devout worshipper passes in attaining a nearness to Allah. The fourteen green water ewers in the red field also serve as reminders for the worshipper to ritually cleanse before prayer.
Hence I class this piece as a prayer rug. Perhaps the most striking feature is its jewel-like palette, exemplified in the white ground border but present throughout the rug. It displays wonderful madder aubergines and reds, and clear naturally derived greens and yellows.
