Shirvan long rug

Shirvan long rug
the southern Caucasus
circa 1880
Size: 460 x 116 cm
Caucasian rugs generally are characterised by contrasting primary colour and boldly geometric design.
This is particularly true of rugs of the southern Caucasus which are long piled and relatively coarse in the knotting.
Most rugs from the Shirvan area feature smaller design motifs and have a shorter, more finely knotted pile.
Some, like this piece, have structural features more in common with those rugs of the southern Caucasus.
The composition of boteh or paisley motifs in the tomato red field is juxtaposed against a barber pole main border.
